HVAC Company in Barrie

Barrie winters are hard on furnaces, and the snow adds a problem of its own. High-efficiency furnaces vent through white plastic pipes on the side of the house, and when drifting snow or ice blocks them, the furnace shuts down. Clear them after every storm. Summers bring the opposite challenge: humid air that an oversized or dirty air conditioner can’t dry out, leaving rooms cool but clammy. And if you’re out in the country without natural gas, a heat pump can make a real dent in propane, oil or electric heating bills. As an HVAC company that’s been here since 1990, these are the calls we know best.

Michael arrived to address a warranty issue with my furnace. The heat exchanger failed and the part was still covered. He worked for approximately 4 hours and was extremely focused on getting the job done right. He removed the old parts and explained the differences between the old part and new one. Once he was done there was no way to tell he was here. Everything was cleaned up 100% and he offered to answer any questions we have. Aire One was great, friendly and extremely responsive. I would highly recommend them!

Heating and Cooling Questions from Barrie Homeowners

Straight answers to the questions we hear most often on the phone and in your homes. Don’t see yours? Call 705-733-1003 and ask.

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Usually the burners aren’t lighting or aren’t staying lit. First check that the thermostat is set to Heat with the fan on Auto, since a fan left On blows room-temperature air between heating cycles. Then replace a dirty filter and make sure the two plastic vent pipes outside aren’t blocked by snow. If the air is still cold, a dirty flame sensor or a failed igniter is the most likely cause, and that needs a technician. Our furnace repair team can usually find it on the first visit.

The most common causes are a clogged furnace filter, a dirty outdoor coil, a failed capacitor or a refrigerant leak. Start with the easy checks: replace the filter, confirm the thermostat is set to Cool, and hose off grass clippings or cottonwood fluff from the outdoor unit. If you see ice on the indoor coil or the copper lines, switch cooling off and run the fan to thaw it. Anything involving refrigerant or electrical parts calls for a licensed technician. Our guide on what to do when your AC isn’t cooling covers more checks.

This is called short cycling, and it usually means the furnace is overheating and shutting itself off for safety. A clogged filter or closed supply and return vents are the most common causes, so check those first. A dirty flame sensor, a thermostat placed near a heat source, or a furnace that is too large for the house can cause the same pattern. Short cycling wears out parts and raises gas bills, so if a new filter doesn’t fix it, book a repair visit.

It depends on the sound. A soft click when the system starts is normal. A loud bang as the burners light usually means delayed ignition, which should be checked soon. Squealing or grinding often points to a worn blower or fan motor, and rattling can be a loose panel or debris in the outdoor unit. Hissing from an air conditioner can signal a refrigerant leak. If a noise is new or getting louder, turn the system off and call a technician. Our articles on furnace noises and AC noises explain each sound.

Once a year each: the furnace in early fall and the air conditioner in spring, before the season when you need it most. A heat pump works year-round, so it benefits from a check twice a year. Regular service catches worn parts, keeps the system running efficiently and helps maintain many manufacturer warranties. In Barrie, a September furnace tune-up means problems are found before the first cold snap rather than on it. Our maintenance plans schedule both visits for you.

On a furnace, the technician cleans the burners and flame sensor, checks the igniter, inspects the heat exchanger, tests safety switches, measures gas pressure and checks for carbon monoxide. On an air conditioner, they clean the outdoor coil, check refrigerant pressures and electrical parts, and clear the condensate drain. Both visits include checking airflow and the thermostat. You’ll get a short report of anything worn or worth watching, with no pressure to fix things that can wait.

For a standard 1-inch filter, every one to three months. Check it monthly during Barrie’s heating season and in the middle of summer, when the system runs the most. Homes with pets, renovation dust or allergies usually need changes toward the one-month end. Thicker 4- or 5-inch media filters typically last six to twelve months. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons for no-heat and no-cooling calls, so it’s the easiest maintenance step you can do yourself. See how often to change your furnace filter
